Symmetric encryption is an encryption method in which a single key is used to encrypt and decrypt data. This method is the opposite of asymmetric encryption, in which two different keys are used to encrypt and decrypt data.
One of the keys is public, and the other one is private. In symmetric encryption, you have to keep the only key you have secure. However, in the other type of encryption, you are allowed to share the public key, while the private key is needed to be kept secure.

- Depending on the algorithm it uses, symmetric encryption can be one of the best encryption methods you can use. Specially, the 256 bit symmetric encryption is essentially impenetrable.
- One of the biggest problems with asymmetric encryption is that it includes lots of maths, and the encryption and decryption process becomes really heavy. This slows down the whole process and decreases the overall speed of the system. On the other hand, since symmetric encryption only uses one type of key, it is easy to undertake by any system. This is the main reason why symmetric encryption is still being used everywhere.
Here are some of the biggest drawbacks of symmetric encryption.
- Since IZpSymmetric encryption relies on only one key, you have to figure out a secure way to transfer the key to the receiver. If you have a secure enough way of transferring the key to the recipient, there is no reason to use the encryption in the first place. This is why symmetric encryption is usually used to encrypt your own data instead of sending data to other people.
- Whenever a data breach happens, the hackers can get access to the symmetric key, and temper, with both the ends of the conversation. On the other hand, symmetric encryption does not let that happen.
